Latest update: On August 31st, Register.com changed the nameservers on a bunch of domain names to BNMQ.com and the registrant info to:

Domain Discreet
P.O. Box 278
Yarmouth, NS B5A 4B2
CA
Email: [email protected]

Register.com had registered domaindiscreet.com for itself on January 3rd and is now using the address of its "discreet" office in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, e.g. blankgeneration.com. All of these domains were in a "REGISTRAR HOLD" status before the 31st and all of them are now in an "ACTIVE" status!?!

Snapnames is probably getting only tailings!?!

Who can blame them? I would keep anything that has value to myself.

Yes. I noticed this with a name I had been tracking for a few months...the name was actually on snap names 2 times in a period of 30 days and never ordered - instead of dropping...I guess they kept the name for themselves...I think it may have been my own fault as I was checking the whois everyother day.

So that's another registrar that's hoarding names for themselves.

Incredible what (not only) registrars can get away with under the umbrella of ICANN.

Just to play devil's advocate (and I am no fan of Register.com) are registrars forced by contract with ICANN to release domains?

Why can't they just pay the renewal fee and "catch" the domain?

Sure it's underhanded but I wouldn't expect anything else from any company that Mark Cuban is associated with.

I have heard that their is a clause in ICANN contracts that states that Registrars may not own domain names. Anyone else?

No that is not true. Of course they may 'own' domains (including their own) but they are supposed not to be 'stockpiling'. What constitutes stockpiling you guess is as good as mine.
