Does this mean the owner paid the fee during the redemption period?

Hmm...the expiration date used to be in 2003 and now it's 2004. Was that an automatic renewal or the owner actually paid?

I understand that part. What I don't understand is, is that a step PAST redemptionperiod (will it be dropping soon?) or it means the domain freezes indefinitely? BTW, telnetting to port 43 of internic.net shows 2004 as the expiration date; regular WHOIS shows 2003.

Quite a few registrars add a year to the expiration date when the
domain reaches expiration (when it moves to registrar-hold
status).

There were a few threads on this a while back, and since it's
a rather long explanation I rather not get into it.

What are you doing bidding on names in Registrar-Hold
status?

Not to sound mean or anything, but honestly I think it
just unnecessarily "jacks up" the price when you bid
so early. Snaps of course are a different story.

I always wait until the name hits PendingDelete
before bidding to avoid the outbid wars. The closer
to drop date, the better (sniping is best in my opinion).

I've got a solution for you, www.Whois-Monitor.com.
For $3.99/month you can monitor up to 50 domains (for
$4.99/month up to 250). When they hit PD or RGP
keep an eye on them and start bidding.

Sorry about being so harsh, but I've got some strong
opinions when it comes to NW bids and I can't keep
my mouth shut.

Ok the domain already showed up as Redemption and had a Snap on it, so I bid on NW. But once again, is it possible that it was renewed?

Yep. Anything is possible, I've seen NSI domains in PendingDelete
get renewed.

I would still lean towards the registrar adding a year though,
since it's very common. Check if the domain resolves, etc
and you'll know by tomorrow if it was renewed or not.

Not neccessary to bid any earlier than the last day of pending period(=drop day) in NW.
If just everybody would think like that, the bidding wars could be avoided.
But i guess it's just like ebay: Some people seem to feel better if they have the high bid for a moment although end of auction is days away.
What a pity i haven't yet found an automated sniping script for NW like there are for ebay...
