ICANN’s much maligned new TLD application process is off to a less than auspicious start. Today was supposed to be the deadline for applying to a new TLD, but due to some ‘technical problems’ (the nature of which remains unknown), the deadline has been pushed 8 days back to April 20. even if you apply, doesn't mean you'll get awarded the extension


there is qualifying criteria that has to be met, which is similar to that of an "accredited registrar" or show ability to admin such functions.

It looks to me that they haven't had as many applications as they hoped for so they're giving it another week to see if they can drum up some more interest.

As much as I would like to believe ICANN to be this evil organization populated with Lex Luthor clones, I don't think ICANN would be willing to jeopardize its TLD process with such a move.
