Wow. Your (ex) friend must have some serious issues in her head.

Im assuming your exfriend was a realtor - should have explained it terms should would understand.

You: "so what you are saying people should not own a domain until they use it..."

Her: "yes, thats right"

You: "ok then, if a house was vacant and not used it should be left ownerless until someone comes along and claims it to live in it...right?"

Her: "um...no that would ridiculous"

You: "ok then, if a piece of land was left undeveloped that should be ownerless until someone comes along to develop it...right?"

Her: "um...no that doesn't make sense"

You: "ok then, what about diamonds, surely they should be left in the ground until an enduser/consumer finds it to make a piece of jewelry, why should people hoard dimaonds and sell them to other dealers and make a profit from consumers"

Her: "well those are rare goods and have value, it is like an investment"

You: "so are domain names"

I think Godaddy COULD compete with Sedo if they somehow made the auctions visible on the first page. Something like Auctions ending soon... a lot of end users use Godaddy one way or the other.

Go Daddy will not dedicate Front of site real estate to auctions, auction revenue can't compete with domain revenue and it's all about revenue.

True in the short term, but I am not talking about a big banner, more like at either the very bottom, or when the user searches for a domain with a keyword, and it triggers not available but alternate suggestions with the auction itself there.

I am sure it would NOT be hard to implement, and Godaddy could charge a heftier chunk of comission then Sedo.

Just this year Go Daddy has started showing exact match Auctions listings to availcheck users as well as spinning Auctions and premium listings, in much the way you describe, on our whois checks. Throughout this year I'm going to try and make sure our end users are aware of the secondary market, and just because a name isn't available to register doesn't mean it isn't available to purchase.
