Scam emails, what to do?

I'm relatively new to domaining and am wondering what the seasoned folk do to identify a con email, such as the appraisal scam?
Do you return mail until you receive the appraisal request? Just except it part of the process?

Is there a way in sourcing their IP address, thus blocking any mail add etc?

If they're serious about the domain they will continue to follow up.

Any email that contains the word appraisal is a scam. PERIOD.

For a start, I don't think many genuine approaches re a domain state something along the lines of, 'We would like to buy your domain name,' or 'We are really interested in a domain name you own,' which is what I sometimes get. Often they don't mention the word 'appraisal' at all till you give a cautious response - which I wouldn't bother with now. At least I've learnt something here.

I have found genuine buyers to be more tentative in their approach, such as asking if the name is for sale and even saying that it's among a shortlist they have in mind for a particular type of website.

As a general rule I treat any offers or info requests from any free e-mail provider with a lot of skepticism (yahoo,gmail, hotmail etc)

If this is truly a domain professional or end user trying to acquire a domain I think they would already have domains they could send e-mail from, rather than hiding behind an anonymous e-mail address. If the e-mail looks to be genuine I would ask that they communicate with me through their company or personal e-mail address.

On any high value transactions it does not hurt to actually talk to the buyer, i.e. call them.....
