Is to become your own registrar... That way no one could hijack, or "accidently" not re-new your name.
I'm having trouble right now with a registrar, which made me think: The only way to have complete control over your names would be to become your own registrar so that you could transfer your names to your company. (cheap way: Tucows registry program).
I'm sure I'm not the first to think about this, but clearly we are not in control. Even the owner of Sex.com is at the mercy of Verisign. The chances of them bungling the fraudulent transfer of the name again is pretty slim, but with today's technology... Anything is possible.
