it not really a buzz....

it's just that they are the only extensions left where they may still be some short (3 characters) or less domains available to reg or buy cheap.

all you have to do is look at your facebook news feed to see why bit.ly and other services are a growing necessity. mobile convergence makes it more and more needed as well since there is the 140 character limit per sms.
