It is for many reasons. People in the US are too attuned to .com domains and even .net / .org. People don't realize that you can get a great .us domain for reg fee or for a small fraction of what the .com would cost - then use the money saved to have a killer website made with great SEO and they could easily beat out any .com for their keyword.

You won't see many good to great .us names drop because they are either in the hands of long-term investors or developers / end users.

Definitely been a tough extension with a lot of unfulfilled potential. I view .us as more of a developer's extension and long term play. You can't let them sit and eat up renewals every year - need to put them to work.

I have sold a couple .us to end users, especially LLL. Many are used as redirects to a longer domain name in .com.
They are effectively used as URL shorteners because end users do not seem comfortable enough to brand their business on .us.

I have almost stopped buying any, but if you are into development it's hard to resist the numerous .us becoming available (which isn't a good sign actually).
