After finally completing the programming of SongHound.com (visit site) I wanted to get fellow DNFer input on the value of the whole package :)

The whole backend is custom scripted (did it myself). What happens is that members register, then can submit links to MP3 files. All submissions go into a confirmation queue and then are manually added to the database (with a flip of a switch that can be automatically updated).

So ... what do you think of the value of the total package (domain, website, scripting)?

I like the name. However, I am not familiar with the laws regarding Mp3's. Would it be illegal to have links to mp3's to download for free? I know with all the media stories lately about people getting sued. Would it be different having links to sites who host the mp3's?

I agree, but I am not sure either about the laws. Also, why make it hard on yourself to manually add the links to the database. Make it automated :)

Well ... at the beginning I want to do it manually to make sure what is getting submitted. I'm trying to cut down on the spam type submissions. Then once it gets going, I'll probably move it to automated submissions / validations.

As for the laws regarding it ... anyone can do a search on MSN, Yahoo! or Google and find the files that are being posted there. So if they can have links to those files in their search engines, why couldn't a website like SongHound.com?

well. its one thing to 'find' mp3's on the net, and its another to have them under one site.
you are an easier target.
still love the site though :)

regarding the legality of linking to mp3's.

I believe this is a similar situation that software companies such as napster and other peer to peer groups are dealing with...

They do not provide or store the files, just provide access (via a link or a connection to them).

The best way to still use your good script and site is to use hosting that allows warez ect... type of hosting. These will allow you to host just about anything and are located on servers that are in russia ect... (where the laws are very hard to enforce for these type of sites).

I know this because I ahve worked with sites that offer software/scripts and full albums for download for free, and have been bothered by legal mumbo jumbo . They move to these type of servers and they are "protected" by being in a grey area, which is enforcing laws in countries that do not have laws against such websites or transactions taking place.

If you would like more information or a couple of hosts to check out, pleas pm me. I am not going to post that info here as I do not believe it follows the TOS at dnforums.com.

Hope this helped some -
