I was just wondering if anyone has come across problems with registering sports team names. Could setting up a fan site, or simply doing nothing with them, prevent future problems?

Be careful if you are registering these names for speculative purposes, sports teams and leagues have been very successful in getting names back through the UDRP. If you are planning on a fan site, that's one thing, but if you think registering WashingtonExpos.com or PortlandExpos.com (insert city with Expos.com here) is going to get you a paycheck from the potential MLB franchise, think again.

A good resource on the issue can be found here: http://udrplaw.net/athleticorgs&UDRP.htm. Although it needs an overhaul, the site has most of the UDRP decisions involving sports organizations. Expect to see a better page in January '03.
