Ok,

Big players need to comment here. Who else has found the thief who has stolen domains that are dead but not yet expired? We are talking big, high profile domains.

This thief has to be prosecuted. I think I know who he is. Does anyone else? A certain federal agency has already been notified and is investigating.

PS. The pros know how this is theft is done. Pure crime.

someone is stealing 'dead', soon-to-expire high-profile domains. No doubt about it. RacerX saw it beginning weeks ago, and it is certainly continuing. Need to bring it to justice here...

Is it only bad because its high-profile domains but the low-profile domains are ok ?

Is it wrong of a registrar to sell off the domains that expire, during the period before it would normally be deleted ?

Of course it is. The domain does not belong to them. But rather the person who registered it. The registrar only provide us with the service to register the domains. Nothing more nothing less.

Are you familiar with the expired list at DomainNameSystems ? I don't think they'd be doing it if it wasn't legal.

As far as I know there are no law that prevent them for doing it. But it is unethical wrong, which also brings us to the issue of WLS. Should companies like Verisign and SnapNames get to decide who the new rightful owner of a domain will be, even if they have not legitimate right to the name?

people around here are a lot more naive than previously thought. There is someone STEALING high-profile domains out there, and they are going get caught at it by the authorities. You watch.

Why so secretive about it then if you want someone to get caught ? Sounds almost like someone is more angry that they aren't getting the name instead.

If high-profile, dead but not expired names are being stolen.. where's the list of them ?

Newbie question(a bit off topic, sorry): if you were to sue someone regarding something to do with domain names, which court do you go to?

actually, the person who registered the name already allowed it to lapse, so they no longer actually own it. Most registrars give a certain time limit for them to reregister it before it is deleted, however they do not *have* to. It may be considered unethical, however it is not illegal. It would not even be considered unethical if the terms of service of that registrar state that they may do that.

This thread is hopeless unless some examples are shown.

Theft of domains is not new in this game, look at the .info landrush - what a FIASCO.

Just what we need ... another "drive by ninny posting". If you are going to post stuff like this follow it up ...without the "pro's only respond" BS ...cause .. we don't know who the heck you are!

pros know exactly what is going on right now. There are those who track the oneword keyword .com names. Many have been now stolen. There is a big elephant in the room and it is going unacknowledged. Those in the know know exactly what has been stolen. You know who you are...

Agree with mole and aactive, makes for very boring reading when people start a thread about stolen domains yet aren't willing to substantiate their claims at all; instead simply claiming the "pros" know what is going on.
