.tel = .fail

That could be an interesting business model; buy country.tel domains and then let people rent their name subdomained:

finbarr.taylor.scotland.tel

Yes, I rather like the sound of that! Maybe, just like they thought with .mobi, they will extend it so that rather than typing a number into my mobile phone, I can type a .tel address.

Why did they settle on that name BTW ?
.tel like telephone ? :rolleyes:

Well, I was thinking about it. A country name are reserved word for Tel register.

and here --> http://www.telnic.org/downloads/geographic.txt

Anyway, there still has a better way :)

So has anyone actually bought any?

auh, actually i'd say plenty of people have already bought them... just not me.

$300 each is way too much... especially for a TLD that will rely 100% on flipping for profit.

I wonder if the people who came up with .tel realise how much the domaining community thinks it blows.

If only the registries would look at my sig :yes:

Seriously, some TLDs should have sunset provisions built in :smilewinkgrin:

.TEL Welcome in the Web 0.5 :lol:

instead of "sunrise" period,

they should start calling it "pull the wool over your eyes" period

as this is the period when the registry builds up the hype in an effort to drive up demand.

other than novelty, i see no use for it.

this is landrush period... sunrise already happened months ago and those cost even more than $300ea

This is an obvious fail, even far worse than .travel.

I felt bad for the .travel people. They spent a lot of money for a booth and paid for one of the lunches for everyone. When .travel names came up at the auction, they would both get their camcorders out to videotape the giant sale of their most valuable keywords... with NO BIDDERS as the ask dropped down to the min of $1000.

Ouch

double ouch... that actually does make me feel bad.. especially the part about getting camcorders out to film the result and having nobody bid.

did somebody eventually buy them at 1k each? what were the keywords?

City.travel, Europe.travel, Fly.travel, Free.travel, Information.travel, Kids.travel, Money.travel, Luggage.travel, Pictures.travel, TripPlanner.travel and HotDeals.travel.

It was REALLY hard to tell what sold at this auction, they went so fast if wasn't clear whether it sold, whether the bids didn't meet reserve, or what happened.

I bought a domain which is related to holiday industry (generic one) (Landrush preorder and successful)

I will use it for using my affiliate links such as

Caribbean.====.tel
USA.====.tel
LasVegas.====.tel
London.====.tel

as my name is so generic and there are EXACT searches around 300,000 per month , I think £280 is not bad.

Just want to participate in the rush. LOL

I don't think you can actually do that with .TEL domains can you? You don't get to alter the DNS or nameserver information.

Anybody believe that they will change the rules for .tel once sales fall flat? Open it up to custom content?
