Shame you can't have ho.tel (assuming 3 letters and up will be allowed).

ahhh, when is icann going to stop accepting new extentions.... Too many already, along with CCTLD, it could be in danger of introducing too many. not to mention it gets confusing, i bet soon .host or something will come out, it just confuses the consumer, they should just keep with the top 5 .com , .net , .org , .info , .biz (imo the .coop etc. are also useless.... )

Being a .tel shouldn't it all be numbers? i think the min will be at least 5 chars... can't see anyreasone why it should be any lower, anyways mo.tel would have also been nice.

The idea is you DON'T want to use numbers with .tel, as numbers can change, etc. You'd want a "shortcut", like george.tel, ibm.tel, which folks can go to find your phone number (or to dial directly like eNum, i.e. plug george.tel into your Palm instead of a phone number, and get where I am at the moment).

eNum would use phone numbers, but we want to use domains as abstractions. Machines like numbers, humans like words.

Sorry, I disagree. The market will decide when enough is enough. I think we are getting pretty close, but if new registries want to take the chance on their "BIG IDEA" I think its wrong to stop them. Most of them won't last long, and if the punters are daft enough, then why not. There are plenty of fools paying huge fees for the like of .eu.com and .uk.com, which don't even need ICANNs approbation.

Best Regards

Yeah that example was lame. I don't bother with /. anymore; they hit their peak in 1999.

I can cross off an item from my "Things to do before I die" list -- I got a story into Slashdot.org! :)

They took the ho.tel joke out of my submission, though, and inserted their own lame example, ugh.
congrats!

Telname Ltd is submitting a request to obtain .TEL as a new Top Level Domain. The purpose of .TEL will be to provide individuals and businesses a text-based naming and navigation structure for the Internet-Communications space: any individual or business will be able to initiate communications or access services simply by inputting AdamSmith.Tel or Hertz.Tel on their Internet-enabled communications device.

Hmmm i reckon i guess the more extensions that come out the more value it brings to the .coms .nets and .infos! Which is great.

Since when did .info have value? :)

I like SlashDot's idea of eliminating TLDs altogether. Open up the namespace and make a flat charge for entries and require justification for owning >100 domains. I think that would solve a lot of problems, especially when IPv6 comes out.

Thats what will happen everybody if ICANN carry on opening up new gTLDs

Is registration going to be limited to certain groups, like it is for .museum, .aero, etc?
