- Chinese continue to come here even in this bad economy?

Half of the boom in China owes its noise to America. With the American economy in the tank, Chinese growth is stunting as well.

Nameadvertising.com: Actually, with China's current boom, and the booms being experienced by several other countries, whilst America going down is going to affect China for a bit, it's not nearly as badly as American economists wish it was, because it makes them feel all jittery.
As it is, English has become the defacto global language, so English teachers are highly sought after in mainland China at the moment, particular in the large cities and industrial regions.
In Australia, I've seen offers of 180-200 Yuan per hour for English teachers. That's nearly US$30/hr. The average wage for day labour is 4 Yuan per hour.
So frankly, you'll probably be doing better as a teacher for a start, and you will be able to save money to send back to you starving family in the USA due to the amazingly low living costs in China...
As for "AmericaTown"... wow, racist and ethnocentric much? And people are leaving China less becuase of the economy, and more because of a repressive & corrupt government.

If it weren't for the fact that I'm already doing better than the equivalent of 200Yuan per hour, it's something I'd be considering.

The point is - Americans may go abroad for a job and they are in extreme minority. No matter how bad the economy, Americans do not leave their country simply because they could get more Yuans to teach English.

Regarding China's government supported economy, the private capitalistic sector is hugely dependent on American consumerism. And if the economy here continues its downward spiral, China is in trouble.

Whether I am racist, that's another issue. Repression or not, people continue to come to America or Australia for that matter for the $$$. The money trail proves it. And the numbers prove it. Where else in the western hemisphere will you find a Malaysiatown or Koreatown? Chinatown - yes!

Unlike America, China is a very smart country. It's government is very smart and will figure its troubles better than America can.

My point was, unlike other countries, Americans don't leave for greener pastures abroad, no matter how bad their economy gets. And the irony is America itself is short of good teachers. And by the way, no one in America starves. Funny to suggest that Americans will leave in droves to other countries to support their starving families. Absurd!

Educators though can and should get paid better in America. They are, like the cops and firemen, not paid as they should.

In America, if you entertain - You rule.

I remember an anecdote from a teacher who visited a Communist country.
He saw a line of people in front of a sort of warehouse and he asked what was that line for, he was told it was to buy underwear.
Later in an argument with another teacher from that country, the comunist teacher told my teacher, "but there are a lot of homeless in Mexico!!"
