So after nearly two years of being out of domains, I came back to a seemingly depressing drop situation, with registrars now auctioning off their own names, the worst of course being network solutions, since most of the great names reside there. With tucows, register.com, and others getting in on the action that leaves mostly only obscure wacky registrars in far away lands that are still dropping good names.

However, for now at least, there are still quality names making it into redemption period and pending delete. There are also new loopholes in the current system which can be exploited by savvy and clever domainers.
It's not what it used to be, but still plenty to be optimistic about. It's like I always said, smart people will always find a way to get in on the action.

I even think that this is forbidden by the ICANN.

Things have changed for sure, not always for the better.
The worst may be yet to come with CLS etc since verisign basically have free rein to do whatever they please.

We have a lot more competition these days.
I think most domainers are not unhappy about the big players but the lack of level playing field in the industry.
There is a lot of money involved and money tends to rot people, especially when there is little oversight on their actions.

Not quite. I remember not so long when I would manually register drops :greensmilewinkgrin:

People like Dom###### or Una##### or whatever for sure. I agree with you there is still room for smart people but you definitely need to get on a much larger scale to succeed in this game, that is big pockets and good connections.

Not anymore. They do not really care since they are in bed with verisign.
The drop game increases the number of firm registrations in the end so it means more $$$$$$. Do not forget that ICANN are taxing every reg so they are just sharing profits with verisign.

I don't want to complain but the business is getting tough. It's also a sign that the industry has matured after all and become as cut-throat as any business :rain:

Well, I disagree with most of this. For one thing, it's still possible to manually register dropped names, in fact it's even easier than it was in some ways. And I'm not going to elaborate on that in a public forum.

I also disagree about the need to "get in on a larger scale". In fact, I would say the opposite is true. I would argue that focus, and "guerilla" type tactics
would fare far better in this situation. If you don't have the resources, then you must compensate by being more resourceful.

The playing field is level, since everyone is where they are now based upon how they've strategically positioned themself in the past. It's about risk. Five years ago one could have done what others have and ended up in the same advantageous position. The fact is many of the same people were complaining about the playing field not being level 3 years ago back when one could put a snap on a name for $60 first come first serve and have a solid shot at ANY name!! And I imagine 2 years before that people were complaining that they couldn't compete to get any of the drops because koreans were using scripts. There's more competition but so what? There's been grocery stores for hundreds of years, but still some guy with a little money decides to start a shop, build it into a chain and can succesfully create an empire if he plays his cards right.

I remember elequa once said it pefectly "the question you should ask is 'what can you do with what you've got, to improve yourself?'"

The one great thing about the current drop situation is the utter chaos and inconsistency of it all. People should be looking for ways to take advantage of that.

just my opinion.
