Is anybody else getting sick of new extensions targeted to suckers?

The worst new extension so far is .MOBI if you ask me. It's just another excuse for ICANN to make millions of dollars from companies trying to protect their TM's.

The very reason people are buyng .MOBI domains is the same reason people simple create subdomains.

Hasn't anybody ever heard of simple creating a WAP subdomain, i.e. http://wap.yahoo.com/ ?

Subdomains have night and day benefits over new extensions being released.

First of all, you don't have to fight millions of people to get your extension. Second of all, you don't have to pay any extra.

I'm personally sick of the extension hype that seems to linger constantly. What's next, perhaps .firefox for the sites that refuse to make themselves work correctly on IE, and maybe .ie for the oldschoolers?

Those ideas sound ridiculous, but it's just as stupid to create a .MOBI extension if you ask me. I doubt we will see big websites using this extension anyway. Seems like more of a "domain game" for the resellers. The good ones will be resold and resold but I think it's more beneficial for a big corporation to not confuse their visitors with different extensions, and instead stick with mobile.domain.com or wap.domain.com.

Just had to vent. Hope you enjoyed it. :)

For the most part, I have to agree.

Alot of these new extensions will just go to the domain graveyard. Anyone who buys one of these is going to have their own reasons why it's going to take off.

They just better be right, otherwise they keep making the registrars rich.

You're right. I'm getting sick of useless extentions. Wait, i AM sick of useless extentions. That's why I stick to a particular 4. I'll let everyone else play with the useless ones.

Wouldn't .MOBL make more sense than .MOBI?

Isn't there enough combinations to let everyone have their own extension who wants one? I'll take .bob

There will be many more after .MOBI like .XXX .WWW and .ABC

I agree .mobi is really the worst TLD.
I think ICANNT is out of touch and I am really wondering what crap extensions will be coming next. Everything is possible, including the worst.
I am voting with my wallet and investing in 'real' TLDs instead. But everyone is free to take gambles with their money.

[BTW .ie is already taken as ccTLD for Ireland :greenrazz:]

dot mobi may make people a good return too early to tell, the way i look at it every dollar spent on a new extension is one less dollar for dotcom ext, so every new fad actually benefits those who stick with dotcoms, it really doesnt hurt our sales either because the same people who offer 100 dollars to buy our names are the same ones who spend thousands on reg fees of new extensions

I agree .mobi is really the worst TLD.

Worse that .COOP?
Worse than .AERO?
Worse that .MUSEUM?

I can see a market for exactly ONE .COOP name:

Chicken.coop ;)

Seriously, I used to think that .MOBI was going to be good, but the more I think about it, the happier I am that I did not spend money on landrush stuff.

I agree that the solution for mobile users is a wap subdomain. I haven't spent dollar one on .mobi. I might regret that one day.. then again I might not!

I actually tried to "surf" the web on my phone once. Only once. Then I decided that is why god invented laptops.

I feel the CCtlds are good though. I can't tell you how many times I search for something on google & come up with a bunch of uk (.com/net) sites on the first page. The brits must be good at seo. Unfortunately I needed US sites. Maybe .us will catch on one day due to this need for local sites.

I agree too ccTLDs make sense but adding
Poker
Loan
Hotel
Casino
Mortgage
Travel
Sex

To everyone one of them, expecting it to be the top domain for countries that don't even know what the English term "mortgage" means doesn't make sense. ccTLDs with keywords that used in that country make sense.

BTW here's a few more good ones

VisitThe.Museum
FineArt.Museum
Harvard.Coop
LastestS.coop
DoubleS.coop

We can go on for days...

Adding new extensions is ICANNs way of typo-squatting. They can sell millions of names under new extensions simply based on the success of the same name with existing extensions.

Perhaps a standard 'm' sub domain could have been agreed to avoid the mobi names and the forced expense. eg, m.yahoo.com.

We can polemize this issue much further....

Some day, probably in the next 5 -10 years, there might be no extention at all.

...or you can just "register" a name as extention...

I mean, this posibility has to be taken into serious consideration...

I agree completely, these useless extensions are just money makers for registries.

As mentioned in a strong case against .mobi, by the W3C device independence group:
It is likely that there would be an ill-founded perception that ".mobi" sites should only link to other ".mobi" sites, to ensure that only tailored content is offered to mobile devices. This would create a web within the Web, potentially fragmenting the Web and thereby harming it.

On the domaining side of things, the only .mobis that will really hold any value are good keywords relating to things you might actually do on a mobile device. weather.mobi, google.mobi, games.mobi, etc.

A lot of names being registered, while potentially having good keywords, are worthless if they have nothing to do with things you do on a mobile device. A .mobi domain doesn't necessarily have value simply because it's .com equivalent is valuable.

I didn't register one .mobi. We'll see eventually if I'll regret it, but I doubt I will.

Ericsson, GSM Association, Google, Hutchison, Microsoft, Nokia, Orascom Telecom, Samsung Electronics, Syniverse, Telefonica Moviles, Telecom Italia, T-Mobile and Vodafone are all aboard the .mobi bandwagon.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this extension!

I look at it this way.

It's all about making money. No one wanted .mobi to make leaps and bounds in the use of the net on mobile devices. No one petitioned for it, no one even gave a flying poop.

I have money, I get a name approved I know I will make money by charging a high enough fee to make it worth while, convince other's they will make money. Domainers are suckers in general, hype creates sales..bingo!

The aftermath is here nor there to these people. Sure it will get used, developed etc...that was a nice after effect. Its all about sales. The market was there, smart investment.
