The importance of .com

I have an old SEO for Dummies book that says that in 70% of the cases most people type in .com even though the website they want to visit is .net or .org or something else.

Is that still the case? Is it still really important to get the .com? I understand national TLDs are better for specific national sites but I'm talking about international websites here.

Yes, always get .com if you are seriously consider developing a site. There is a reason why a .com with the same keyword worth a lot more than .net or any other tlds.
