I still have a couple of .name addresses from the years when people used them as a personal email, and this announcement is the small visible part of a bigger problem. Third-level addresses like [email protected] were sold as a permanent identity, so they ended up inside bank profiles, airline accounts and password reset flows, not only in someone's address book. When forwarding stops in February, those reset messages bounce and the owner usually finds out months later, at the worst possible moment.

If you hold one, do the boring work now rather than in 2027. Set up a catch-all or an explicit forwarder at the domain level on a mail host you control, send a test from an outside account, and check SPF and DKIM while you are in there, because forwarded mail that fails authentication lands in spam and you will assume the forwarder is broken. Then walk through the accounts that still use the address as their recovery email and change it.

The wider lesson is that an address on a namespace you do not operate is a rented mailbox, whatever the marketing said at signup.
