Wait, it says that this is from the 'Weekly World News'. I thought this was a legit Yahoo story, but isn't the Weekly World News one of those rags found at the register, along the lines of the Enquirer and Star?

Right. But the influence of such tabloids on the average John Doe could be devastating.
Just take a look at another article from the same site:

"We're the most powerful nation on Earth and we ought to act like it, by jiminy. I say, let's shove peace down the throats of these foreign rascals -- no matter how many people we have to kill to do it."

Would you expect anything less from a columnist named Ed Anger. :) His stuff is worth a laugh, but I doubt anyone takes it seriously. Here are some of his other recent articles.

Sure, many articles and stories from such tabloids are funny and even hilarious, like the one about Japanese soldier found hidding in a jungle, not knowing the WWII is over, or "BLIND MAN REGAINS SIGHT AND DUMPS UGLY WIFE!'' , or the last "Time Traveller" news; those ase really kind of articles that keep the original entertainment intentions.
However the "Cowboys" article is far away from that spirit and if not in irresponsible it was at least written in extremely tasteless manner.

BTW, here is some inside view into the tabloids world:
