wonder if i could ask for some advice. just bought a fit for life .net on a whim, without realising that various books, weight programmes etc have been written on this. checked on trademarkia, and this has not been registered on the database. is it ok to develop this as a website, or would i be treading on thin ice?

Nothing good to say about this one. Terrible domain, Terrible TLD, Blatent TM. Don't bother developing. Ask for your money back or better yet, just delete it from your portfolio and chalk it up to a cost of learning.
