Hi,
I have just bought a blog site from this area. It's my 1st purchase and 1st post. I have initiated a transfer of domain to my own server which takes about a week I believe. Does this process have any problems in affecting te site? ie The site will presumably be down for a while between transfer and I hope this won't affect the site, or its PR (5).
If I have posted this query in the wrong place, then I apologise. I really don't know what I'm doing - but I'm learning fast!

I presume you mean you have transferred it to your registrar. The site shouldn't go down at all while the name is transferred and it can take anything from about 12 hours to 5 days in my experience.

Once the domain is at your registrar the next thing you need to do is transfer the site over, hopefully your seller will help you with this if needed.

Finally you need to point the domain at the new website on your server by changing the nameservers with your registrar. This should only take up to about 10 minutes with most registrars these days, but there may still be the odd one where it takes a day or two. Again this should be a seamless transition.

There is no reason why the site should ever appear to be offline, but you will lose any updates users make to the site from when the site is copied to when the nameservers update, but this shouldn't be more than half an hour. If it is a site which is likely to be updated a lot during this half hour, it may be an idea to remove the site and put up a holding message on the old server while the site is transferred, this means it will appear down for a short period, but nothing will be lost.
