My criteria for picking domains (esp. .us domains)
involves

1. TM search

2. availability search and making sure that I pick up the last domain available in the major extensions of .com,.net, .org, .biz, .info, and .us

3. marketability search - checking the development of .com,.net,.org., biz, info, .co.uk, de, and .com.au - The more sites developed the better.

Basically, I would like to get rich like everyone else. But the more immediate goal is to get out of student loan debt.

I've had some offers on many domains such as supplies.us, gelatin.us, mytrademarks.net, = but the buyers wanted to get something for nothing - so I refused.

I've gotten mixed reactions - some people say that my domains are excellent and others say that they are not worth much. I guess that's the nature of this game - subjectivity.

Like I stated before, I would sell my domains in a heartbeat to get out of student loan debt. Hopefully, I'll get rich in the process later on after the us gets out a the recession.

Give me some serious appraisals. Thank you.

hhunterjr, I am a newbie myself so don't put too much weight on what I am saying here...

but reading your post here made me feel a bit uneasy, and I'm not astonished you haven't gotten a comment yet.

Please don't take offense in what I'm saying, I'm just trying to help you as a fellow-newbie. Ok ?

And trying to get rich... I think those times might be over. Domains are not the same now as they were three years ago. As far as I can see even good domains are now sold for peanuts rather than dollars. And with the first class names gone (genericword.com) what's left is crumbs of the cake that others ate.

The only thing I see to get rich in the domain-field... Find a niche and develop the names. Websites with traffic and/or profit seemingly do well still.

Hope you don't get hung up on the critique and can focus on the well-meant sharing of what little experience I have been able to acquire so far. My words were meant well, hope you can receive them that way too )

Those are your best .com's in my view. .com is still gold, and everything else just isn't the same. But I have also regged a few .info and .us in the past, but it seems those extensions just never really take off. Some input from more experienced folks around here would be interesting... How's .us and .info doing these days?

I'd love to have more quality .coms, but I was too late for the .com rush. Now I have to hope that .us and .info catch on so that I can make more money.

.us and .info both show promise for the future. But it's just too early to tell.


One thing that works in my favor is the sheer number of domains that I own. I own about 250 domains or so and I think that they are pretty good. I've dropped the ones that I feel are bad.

If each domain sold for $1,000 - that would be $250,000 gross.

I know that some of my domains like supplies.us and gelatin.us are worth way more than $1,000 even right now.

I think that supplies.us could easily sell for $25,000 or more. I've gotten some inquiries from major companies about gelatin.us (gelatin is used in many industries besides food) - I think that gelatin.us has the potential to sell for high 5 figures to the right end user company.

each domain will NOT sell for $1000....not even close....

sorry to burst your bubble, but the entire thing is worth maybe $3000-$5000.....

supplies.us is worth maybe $200, not much more....

I dont know where you are getting this numbers, but they are badly skewed, and I am sure some fellow DNF'ers will agree with me...

and keep most until .us picks up.

They're mostly end user value, like buffers.us most are for
technical firms, you have to approach companies to get returns
from them right now. Pick 20 and offer at $200 each that's
your loan paid off!

Why are you criticisizing someone elses appraisal with a snide comment. He gave his and you gave yours, no need to comment on others appraisals. Why am I always having to tell you how to behave.

bionic is correct.

I really don't intend to sell too many domains right now. If I didn't make my big sale or big sales until 2015 - I'd only be 45 years old if I were still alive at that point.

I don't know if .us will take off or not -that's why they call it "speculation." But I do know that many companies are using .us webpages in addition to their .com sites or as an alternative. (See http://dnforum.com/t43759).

So it does have potential. Plus there were alot of skeptics about .com back in the early 90's as well. Now .com is still "gold" according to many dnforum members. Think how many people missed out on dot com because of skepticism.

All of the money that I've invested this year on domains is tax deductible as long as I keep my little internet business up on http://www.domainterritory.com

So I'll get that money back on the tax return that I file in 2004. So there's really no down side as far as the investment that I've put into thus far.

Anyway, it may be a pipedream - but I don't think it is if I hold onto the domains for 10-15 years and then sell. That's my plan.
