I know that in the general community it is frowned upon to try to register domains with high PR only because of the PR, however it seems to interest me and my idea(s).

I used to simply go to the domain I was considering regging, getting a 404 page, and seeing the pagerank in the google toolbar.

Now however, I try this tactic and the site forwards to Verisigns site finder, and thus I do not have a chance to see the domains PR.

How can I find the google PR of an expired domain?

You could put the domain in your hosts file so that you don't get sent to VeriSign's site finder
