Hi all,

I want to register a domain since it is available and start a website immediately.
The problem is that the domain is has a word which is a trademark.
For eg: I know that sony.com is a copyright company and i find that sonyreviews.com is available and would like to start a site which would be a review site for sony products. Will this be a problem , am i violating their copyrights or domain trademarks. Please guide me with this....

Thanks! :)

Best to contact the company whose trademark you may be infringing and see what they say, IMO.

Thanks for suggestions folks,
just curious, rather contacting the company about the trademark issue or getting permission, can i register the domain , start using it....and if the original company has any problems i can always communicate with them about this. The overall idea of this is that , this situation can be handled in a positive way without me getting into a legal hassle.
With regards to profit, ofcourse i would like to make some profit out of this site by placing google adsense codes on my site....
....any opinions about this?
thanks again!:)

It's a not a question of whether or not you can register them, it's a question as whether or not the trademark holder will see the name as an infringement and attempt to end your use of the domain.

Just go to afternic and do a search on google. you will see that there are 20,000 ++ domains for sale with the word google in them, some good ones are going for $75 !

Do you really think that google can go after 20,000 + domain owners ? and this is ONLY one auction site !

Too much time and money consuming to go after them.

btw, afternic has 10,000 + names with sony in it, so you are just 10,000 + 1.

Go ahead and buy the domain and do as you like.

Great idea RaGa, thanks for the suggestions.
Actually i had thought about making a site out of this domain but since i have to devote time to my other sites also i need your suggestions on this too
, i know that if this domain is submitted to a search engine , i can revieve substantial amount of traffic ....... so can i just park this domain at sedo and submit it to search engine and ofcourse, depending on whether this domain recieves any traffic , sell it over a period of time.

Thanks,

James

paypalsucks.com is perfect running website and paypal cant do anything against the site. you are allowed to criticize a website but not profit from its name.

I don't think there should be a problem as you want to start a site which would be a review site for sony products on that name and you are not directly competing against their business.
