I own www.vincotte.com which is a surname. A sizeable company recently changed their name from AIB-Vincotte to Vincotte (see www.aib-vincotte.com). They have expressed an interest in the domain. Can you guys please PM on what you think I could ask for this domain? FYI, before they went public with the name change, I had it appraised by Sedo for 42,000 Euros. I would think it's worth more now that they have changed their name. I have already established that there is no tradmark issue. Your help is GREATLY appreciated. Again, please PM.

Appraisals dont mean anything. I can have adsf34543.com appraised for $100K. A name is worth only as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I don't think the company would pay more then $2-3k max for the name. Also if vincotte.com is not your surname, they can take the name from you in court.

In my opinion- domain appraisers tell the customer what they want to hear, not the service they are paying for. Many (most?) times the customer is paying to hear what they want, not the value though :)

I wouldn't be quick to throw away that appraisal just yet... the good folks at Vincotte likely know nothing about domains or domain value and that appraisal could be a way to say to them we're starting here and going UP. It's a good bargaining chip.

Normal everyday folks attach professional appraisals to "real" value. For instance, the guy down the street has a house appraised at 50k, but he knows on the market real estate appraisals usually reflect a low ball estimate. The people at Vincotte are likely to have that kind of appraisal sort of experience and not the kind that you find with domains that are almost always high balled or ridiculous.

Just because another domainer wouldn't give you much for it, doesn't mean people outside this bubble would get that at all. That's why some people are able to sell domains for crazy amounts of money... they sell them to people who don't know any better.

Vivvy, in this world, you cant assume people are idiots. I am very well sure that every company who is buying a domain, especially their own name, knows how much it is worth.

There's a difference between being an idiot and not knowing ... i can't fly a plane, don't know how... i wouldn't think that characterizes me as an idiot...

The domain market is a narrow niche. Ask normal, non-geek people if they know what godaddy sells after that $2.4 million dollar super bowl commercial... I'd be surprised if you could find anyone outside the tech industry who knows off the top of their head, even after seeing it...

If the value of domains weren't as subjective as it is and if many of you weren't taking advantage of the fact that people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for what you paid $8.95 a year for... then you could assume that people who aren't in the domain business would have a good idea what their domain is worth. But the whole reason you make money at what you do is because everyday folks don't understand the domaining business, or that you all own domains that really aren't worth more in reality than the registration fee.

It's a sellers market... heavily weighted in favor of those who sell and their ability to convince buyers that what they have is valuable. A pre-existing appraisal is a great way to convince... And beyond all that... it's the idiot who says, I can sell that for you for $1k when he has a $42k appraisal in his hand to show the perspective buyer. How does that make sense? Will he get $42k? who knows... but it's a heckuva lot better place to start bargaining from...
