Hi, i'm trying to get some info on a particular domain. Say the info in the whois was:

Registrar of Record: TUCOWS, INC.
Record last updated on 13-Feb-2006.
Record expires on 01-Mar-2009.
Record created on 01-Mar-1999.

Would you be able to tell if this was registered at the outset for ten years, or if registration had been renewed each year. (And would it be any different if the expiry dates were different, say they were six or eight years apart.)

If its not possible to tell through this, is there a way? Some way I can check if someone has been renewing their domain each year or if they registered it for a long period at the outset.
?

I know of one way that might help you out, but for that I would need the actual domain name. Please PM me and I can see what I can do.

Hi,

The coincidence between the creating date and the expiring date suggests that the domain name was probably created for ten years which is the maximum period allowed for registration or renewal.

Sometimes, a lookup in a historical whois like: http://domain-history.domaintools.com/ can also be useful to get some information about whois update during the lifetime of a domain name.

thanks.
what if the day and month dates were the same, but instead of ten years apart, they were say, eight years apart - would the fact that they were the same date indicate anything?

Hi,

The registration and expiration date do usually coincide (except in some very particular cases like domain sync) and the fact that they were the same date does therefore not help much to know if the renewal was annual or for several years.
