I left Seti @ home when they forced us over to Bionc (years ago). I decided today to hop back on and wouldn't you know it, their systems are having issues. :upset::lol:

SETI - (The) Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence - it's a huge project that has antennas listening into space for anything "not natural".

A big part of it is a lot of home computers run the scans / analysis of the data and sends it back in "work units".

Interesting. Have they ever reported something "not natural"? I'm not a big believer in aliens but we can't be the only life in the universe.

Not yet but I think less than 1% of the data has been analyzed.

But, when I was on a team before one of my team member's work unit had a result rated as "interesting" by SETI. We never heard if it was anything or not.

One is connected now and working on a work unit but the other two are not. Hmm... If they're not connected tonight, I'll contact their "support guy".

There are several projects similar to this one, I think even the project genome was similar but there is one for the cure for cancer.

Actually I have found a significant majority of "domainers" to be unsophisticated if not totally ignorant when it comes to computer science.

Yeah, BOINC (Berkley Open Infrastructure Networked Computer) is basically a giant distributed super computer that uses your computer's spare cycles (read: screen saver mode) to crunch numbers on insanely complex mathematical models.
I used to use SETI@Home till they switched to BOINC as well, except my firewall really doesn't like the new software, so I can't run it anymore.
