I wanted to make a quick point to anybody that might be considering rushing out - and registering a bunch of .cn names. If you wouldn't (or didn't) grab the same name in the .us extension - then you probably don't need to grab it in the .cn extension. It's not the next .com - it's the next country code - like .us was when it launched. In this case it's (arguably) not even as good as .us because of the obvious language barrier - and the Internet population only being 1/3 of the U.S.

Just something to keep in mind - before you max out your credit cards!

I'd agree with that popper..especially the language barrier...

Stay generic..think numbers (no language barrier there) ..and play responsibly :)

Although the growth of the Chinese internet is suppose to to grow by leaps and bounds every year for the next few at least..

Yes, to register numerical .cn domains is a smart move. Easier to remember for everyone.

Good luck:)

Yes, arent you in Honk Kong?

I think I recall a discussion a few months back and you mentioned numbers then as being the way to go because of the wide variety od lanquage barriers, even from within China from all the differnet dialets, not even considering the the barrier of English for the Chinese..I remember how much sense that made..

I aprreciate the heads up..

I am in Taiwan:razz:

The number "8" is a lucky symbol to most of Chinese(so that's why casino-on-net.com acquired 888.com and branding it all over the internet), so pick it within your numerical domains if have any.

Keep in mind that .cn can also serve as a bridge between english speaking internet users shopping or surfing in the Chinese market (as it hopefully opens up more and more). It's not restricted to chinese speaking users.

So 890 not to bad then..? What does "0" and "9" represent ?

Found this is my search..

Chinese is probably one of the very few languages where several different words meaning different things can have identical pronunciation. For example "zhong" can mean "center", "royal", "end", "clock", "bell", "love", "sincerity", or "rice dumpling"; "tong" can mean "same", "copper", "child", "servant",and "barrel". A number of words also have very similar pronunciations to numbers. For example:

The number 1 (pronounced "yao") is very close to the pronunciation for the word "yao" that means "want" or "you" that means "has".
The number 4 (prounced "shi") can mean "generation", "world", "is", or "death".
The number 5 (pronounced "wu") is very close to "wo" meaning "me"
The number 6 (pronounced "liu") is close to "liu" that means "slippery". Thus "66" means slippery or "smooth running"
The number 7 (pronounced "chi") sounds like "chu" meaing "go" or "che" meaning "eat"
The number 8 (pronounced "ba") sounds close to "fa" which means "prosper"
If you have been to China, you might notice the unusual frequency of the number "8" in the telephone numbers of hotels, airlines or businesses. Most of these are supposed to carry a good omen or blessing for the "prosperity" of the enterprises.

Telecommunication companies and car registration authorities in China have unwritten rules to charge extra for each number "8" that you want on your telephone number or your car license plate. Here are some "properous" telephone numbers:

Shanghai Shi Mao Riviera Garden Estate - 6888 8888
Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Shanghai - 6252 8888, 6280 8888
Ocean Hotel, Shanghai - 6545 8888
Sheraton Taiping Hotel, Shanghai - 6275 8888
Rizt Carlton Portman Hotel - 6279 8888
China Travel Services, Shanghai - 6247 8888
Northwest Airlines - 6279 8088
J.C. Mandarin Hotel - 6279 1888
Galaxy Hotel - 6275 5888
Nikko Hotel - 6255 9888
Overseas Chinese Bank Corp - 6329 0888

"0" in Chinese has never been a lucky number or symbol as I know.

"8" is the most lucky one, and we usually use at least double 8 to mean lucky or prosper, triple 8's is the best choice though.
" 9" sometimes means "long life" as well as a lucky symbol(everyone wants to live longer:D).

"6" is also luckier than other numbers.

"4" means dead in most cases. :dead:

good luck!

Welll, I got wyvern.cn...until the .com comes available.

Got several from the Dotster auction...they just came into my account about an hour or so ago....

Bought several more through Enom during the day and they were in my account in about 1 minute.

Oh remember that there are MORE than one type of chinese language. Mandarin and Cantonese are the major ones.

Cool - I grabbed a nice double (88) number. There are four (3 digit with '88') left at this time.
