For Sale What do people use to "catch" domains these days?

Been out of the game for years and years, without keeping myself updated.
So my question is: what services are the best at the moment for catching domains? As i understand it, most of the services auction the caught names?

Can't afford the Fishnet so I catch them with my bare hands.

I check the dropped list and register them everyday.

I think hand catch is best, but how do you guys finding good names any good software or list to do this.

I just can't see hand catching working for anything half good when you are going up against all the drop catching services. Is anyone having success doing so?

I was thinking the same thing. Personally I don't mind paying more for someone else to do it, then all I need to do is have my list of domains I'm after, keep adding to it and forget about it until I win the domain.

I understand that but the thing is some of these are well worth a reg fee but not $60 for the catching fee. I think it really depends on what your plans are for a given name is and then one can better judge how to go about acquiring it when it drops.

Has anyone had success with any of the scripts you run on your own to snag a name you wanted?

I have had some success with hand regs. If noone dropcatches an expiring domain there is more than 50 percent chance if the name deletes on time someone will use Godaddy or a similar registrar to snap the domain up for cheap. Otherwise you can hand register the domain if you are quick enough.

That was my original thinking as well that's why I wanted to get some feedback as how others do it.

For developing small niche websites, hand regs can bring in good PPC income. You just have to know what to look for.

For me I'm usually very specific about what I want. I don't buy domains to resell, I'm only looking to make new websites or enhance ones I already own with a better domain name. It doesn't take very long to make $60 back. The renewal prices are expensive at namescout, where pool names go, but I'll tranfer them to somewhere cheaper and get a year's free reg at the same time when the renewal comes up.

Yes, godaddy is a good (and cheaper) option for catching domains that are not backordered with the larger dropcatchers like snap/pool. Now that tasting activity is much lower than before it's easier to catch names.
