For Sale What does it mean when

a domain you want to register ... says "This domain is not available" but when you click on the who is it says that it is not taken? This is what it says exactly:

"Welcome to GABIA.COM's WHOIS data service. No match for ******.COM.This domain is available for purchase! Register a domain name at www.gabia.com"


I am asking because I saw a name i was interested in a couple of weeks ago on a drop list ... didnt think anyone would register it, and am just now getting back to see if it is available yet.

It means nothing. If the domain is not available, it's not available. That message is coming from a registrar's whois server. You can't rely on that. If you want to know the true status of a .com or .net domain, check the registry's whois server, whois.crsnic.net, or use this interface: http://registrar.verisign-grs.com/whois/

Toasty, is the Internic.net whois feature the same as the verisign link you posted?

Ahh thanks just as i thought ... it is registered at a japanese register (Gabia)
