Thanks for that, Finbarr. Do you know if that's the actual number 8 in a name, or would it also be 8 letters? But please realise that it's not my theory. Someone I know was selling a house and was told by a Chinese couple that they would love to buy but wouldn't because the address contained the number 4 and there were four letters in the street name. I thought that this was a bit strange, and wondered if it would extend to four-letter domain names also. I was told by a lady whose mother is Chinese (from Hong Kong) that it would. She said that the origin of the idea has something to do with the Chinese symbols for 4 and for bad luck either looking or sounding similar. :)

So, nothing sinister about my question. Just simple curiosity, and it might turn in useful some time.

Thanks again, Finbarr. That's most interesting. :)

The superstition centers around the name of the numbers and how those names reflect upon the individual. Rather than post a dozen pages of information, I found a good reference that should help you understand.

ahh, just noticed someone has already posted the link yet paraphrased the source badly.

Thanks for the thought, anyway, Austin. And again to you, Finbarr. :)
