What is OVERTURE?

I keep seeing people refer to overture and churning out stats to back up the cost of their name???
Could someone explain to me what overture is and how it works. And how i could use it and how it is useful to them?

Though have you noticed that overture always gives the singular for the terms. Whats with that?
