OK so you've registered your $2.99 domain with FlyByNightNames.com and built it up over the year to make some good income. Then for "some reason" your renewal doesn't "go through" and all of a sudden someone else owns your money-making domain or it's being auctioned by a drop catcher. So you could spend a few thousand bucks to appeal it to ICANN, or you could have just registered with a reputable registrar for $7.95-$11.95 in the beginning.
It's like building a house on a cheap foundation. If it's only a few dollars more to protect your investment, I think it's worth the peace of mind.
