what timezone?
And there is nothing really You can do with this know-how, because everything is picked up by data mining registrars, so You can not register dropping domains manually or with Your little script.

11:00 - 11:30 AM PST Pacific Time. - for .com and .net domains

Maybe, but I am too lazy
I add domains that I like to snapnames or CD and they do the work.

Assuming you are talking about .com .net etc it used to be around 14:00 EST I think (not sure about the time zone). That's the so-called gold rush hour. Many names are still released around that time but can drop sooner or later. Due to the massive dropcatching activities going on some registrars will now release the names at a more or less random time at the scheduled date (if I'm not wrong).

Okay Darren, a few folks playing coy here and having fun.. you're obviously new, looking for a direct answer to a question with a subtle alterior motive...

Real question:
"I'd like to acquire an expiring name that I think is really valuable that nobody else sees but me" (its my little secret).

Real Answer:
The name you see that you "think" is good (good name with powerful meaning to the mases) has already been identified by a professional domain name aggregator in the China, America, Caribbean, Europe and they will outspend you at auction once the name expires for non-payment and goes through the auction process with Pool.com, Snapnames.com Enom.com auction systems.

If you get the name easily after it expires that is only because it has little or no value from a type-in traffic perspective to the people who really understand the value of generic expiring names.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad-news; but I wish somebody had given me this direct advice 5 years ago.

Are we talking about two different topics?

When do they expire?

Are you asking if the domain expires on 12-26-05? Does it expire at 11:59 pm eastern time?

Are you asking - if the domain has expired, when will it drop?

If it is a .com and .net - verisign releases them between 2 pm and 2:30 pm eastern time.

Unfortunately, there are a couple forces in play here. If the domain has actual commercial value,
the small, medium and large players already know about it and will be chasing it
thru the dropping catching services. In reality, you can not beat the catching services
by using a script or trying to do it manually.

Then, you have a new group of domainers (domain data mining companies) that capture
EVERYTHING that the primary catching services don't grab.

And, there is a hierarchy of data mining companies. Some are very selective and
a few act as a vacuum cleaner.

Chaiki is partially incorrect because this system of dropping has only evolved over the past 3 yrs*. Before then, names dropped totally differently and inconsistantly.

(*The redemption process started Feb, 03)
