While doing research I found one nice .com domain. It has already expired. Here are few details:

Registrar: BizCN.com
Created: 2003-12-30
Expires: 2007-12-30

But the domain status is on-hold.

Can the registrar hold the domain for so many days?

When will that domain get deleted so I can register it?

Please help me to understand this.

if it ever gets deleted, it may go straight to some "drop catcher".

ie: snap/pool/namejet etc.

Is there anything I can do to register it?

Backorder the domain. Go to pool.com, namejet.com, snapnames.com ...

Do I need to backorder it from everyone or just one service provider will do the job?

Anyone knows how soon after a "delete" command is sent to the registry a domain gets deleted?

Normally the delete is instant.

Is it really instant? No delay for any reason, e.g. database syncing? Is the domain available the very next second?

Does such a domain cost more than the normal registration fee?

Depends on the registrar backend, the request could be sent to a queue but it would usually be a matter of seconds anyway :)

Here is a nice visual of a domain life cycle. Link

If the domain drops it may be "tasted" for weeks at a time.
