I had a problem with my domain provider (not a registry, just a reseller), they didn’t renew it timely and it got into redemption period - I didn’t know domain names had that! Now I know it consists in paying $100 for a renewal that costs less than $10.

Decided to let it expire and register it again. After all, who could want to have the name of my dog? However, it expired, was registered the same day and since then it already had two different owners. Most probably it’s someone trying to sell me my own domain!

Shall I contact the latest owner or shall I wait and see what happens?

Hi,

As you have noticed, there is a 5 days grace period during which the registrars can cancel domain registrations without paying for them. Some registrars are exploiting this loophole in the system for registering and cancelling domains repeatedly, which is commonly known as 'Domain tasting'.

These registrars use automated scripts to check and register large amount of dropped domain names and, after testing the traffic, decide to delete the domain or otherwise maintain it active. It is therefore not a good idea to visit the domain you are interested in very often!

By the way, this practice is getting a problem for Registries. Although money is being done by the 'Domain tasting', the Registrars doing so are not paying anything for these domains while consuming the registry resources and overloading the system.

Many registrars have been created for this purpose only, and a 90% of the domains registered every month are being dropped before 5 days. PIR, the registry of the .org extension, have already alerted Icann about the negative impact of the domain tasting on the Internet.

You can blame only yourself

That last thing you should do is show interest in your domain. You are screwed. I suggest you register [dogname]dog.com or some other name.

Calling a domain name "yours" even after you let it expire is the kind of thing that ignorant non-domainers do, and it's the kind of attitude that causes so much problem for domain investors.

why are you guys being asses? He was very clear that his registrar, a reseller... dropped the ball on this... so get off his ass and help if you have an answer instead of wasting his time to prove you can be a jerk.

Unfortunately registrar error or no registrar error, the domain is gone. His registrar can't make the new owner give it to him, and chances are they won't admit to the error. Even if they do, I'm sure their TOS covers errors such as this, which is why they send renewal notices prior to the domain expiring. It's unfortunate, but I wouldn't expect them to do anything about it.

Just out of curiosity, who was your reigstrar for this domain?

Your best bet is to buy it from the new owner. Hopefully it's not a very brandable name.

Well, if you wait I suspect it will be a year minimum before you see what happens. Did you see when the expiration on the domain is? If you dont want to pay more than reg fee then you wont see the name anytime soon.

Oh and ya like 007 asked, who is the registrar?

maybe you could change the dog's name to one you can register?.....don't get mad...just a little humor lol
