What's up with the 88's? I see prices everywhere for $988, $1288, $2588 and so on. Is there a marketing/psychology reason behind it?

BuyDomains.com started it with the 88 on end of all their BIN prices a few years ago, i.e. $688., which also was the minimum prices from what I recall.

I believe they discontinued it.

actually *7 is the new trend in internet marketing this year:) Almost all products/memberships sold in the IM industry end with 7. And I think I read somewhere, that statistically, pricetags ending in 7 have the highest success rate (most likely because those ending in 9 are becoming a cliche)

people are already immune to '99 and '999

'88 and '888 is different
if you add 1 here, you still do not have a number that can be easier remembered

Maybe this has nothing to do with it, but...
8 is considered lucky in China.

Retail stores designate .88 for clearance pricing.

Most stores have .99 = regular prices items, .98 special promo pricing, .97 = means something else. This is how they keep track of their sales.

Look at all the clearance stores, i.e. Brandsmart, everything ends in .88

Same reason why prices end in $1,999. Makes one think they are spending less compared to a purchased priced at $2,000. There are quite a few web sites out there that have reports on pricing statistics and research they have done.
