WIDGETS.BIZ

Grabbed this domain before the recent buzz regarding "widgets" or "gadgets". Yahoo, google, facebook, and other sites are using these types of programs. I've received several offers $x,xxx thus far. Any thoughts on valuation?

nice - this is the first .biz tld that I actually like - also think BEA and that business software objects area - some deep pockets there for an exceptional generic AND "brandable" via the .biz extension !

Really nice one IMO could be $xx,xxx maybe eventually even 6 figures to the right end user.

Widgets are a fad. Sell it for low $xxxx if you have offers.

fad = word in use for over 80 years ?

see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget_(economics)

one of many sub-categories of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget (also interesting: http://blog.snipperoo.com/2006/08/what_is_a_widge.html ...)

maybe some particular use of the word is a fad but linkage to "biz" theme is enduring ... maybe the rare case where ".biz" extension carries decent weight in a natural fit.

advice to take profits when opportunity presents always worth considering but personally I'd hold on to this one for more serious offers from truly interested parties if I had the option.

I like the domain. I would say in the $1,500 to $2,500 range.

if you actually have offer in the low to mid $$$$ range, sell it, .biz are not good at all and are going to drop in value even more IMO, keep in mid videogames.biz just sold for low $$$$, compared to that domain widgets.biz should be worth maybe half or a third of that, the advice here to wait for 5 or even 6 figures is just straight out wrong and shows inexperience IMO

widgets are getting popular on Facebook and other sites, and are a way to minimize info, so I think they will be around awhile. around mid $x,xxx area since it's .biz, nice keyword with so-so extention.

agreed certainly wrt comments about value of .biz extension in general and likely $ ceiling on offers from resellers, & all the experience that conventional wisdom is based on. Seems likely 99% chance acting on advice to take profits now would not be regretted later.

still personally I would want to take a real close look at that maybe 1% potential for eventual $xx,xxx sale to end user such as businessobjects.com (aka BizObjects) (for which SAP last week agreed to pay $6.7 Billion - for the company not the domain name ...!)

so want to try to calculate risk vs reward - let's do a little (maybe over simplified) math - say 99% chance 3 years from now you find best offers now just $250 not $2500, so you "lost" about $2K profit opportunity + 3 years of reg fees + acquisition price. Balance against 1% chance you get it sold to SAP or their competition for say $25,000 ... Now considering that 1% of $25,000 is $250 - that's definitely not so good compared to taking certain profits now, based on those numbers. Alrighty then - so unless I'm way off with the odds and end-user price, maybe I was tripping a bit on this one! LOL. But who knows ... If the odds ratio is more like 90% to 10% instead of 99% to 1% then risk vs. reward starts to balance. Might consider odds 50-50 (either it will or it won't happen, who knows) - and then the reward far outweighs the risk.

(Might be interesting to come back to this thread in a few years and see how widgets.biz played out ... )

Anyway, nice name - good luck with it!

i dont think even 1% is realistic, there are many factors that you are not considering here. Before someone would spend any big money on the .biz, the holders of better TLDs, such as the .info, .net or .org (which are all parked) would sell before any price is reached that would get close to 10k IMO, if you are a big company you are going for the .com, net and if thats not available you take a different word with .com.
So the "risk reward ratio" is different if you are asking yourself what the chances are to sell this for 25k or more.. 1:100..I wish.....probably more like 1:10.000 probably even worse. So if you want to put it in mathematical terms, here is how to figure it out: 2.5k now = playing it safe..taking the other way = 1k later + the chance of getting 25k at 0.01% = $2.5 = 1002.5, thats the value of the other way..and that does not even factor in the time value of money at your cost of capital, which is rather high in the domain world.

For those who don't know Rick Schwartz owns Widgets.com (which is obviously the best domain).
Here is what he had to say at His Blog on October 06, 2007 in his entry titled "The Dilemma of a Domain Owner":

"Now Widgets.com has another story. Purchased a decade ago to explain the most generic of generic domain names and the power they have and why something like Widgets.com would say something to the world and have value. I spend no time on the widgets.com project. I am distracted. However even with those realities evolution has stepped in and as you might imagine Widgets.com is one of my fastest growing domain names."

Widgets are very popular. Not only on Facebook and other websites, but also with the release of Windows Vista, MacOS X and the upcoming Mac OS X Leopard. Widgets will not fade any time soon. mid-hi $x,xxx reseller.

hey, thanks for sharing your insight and analysis. Have to appreciate the wisdom of someone who actually puts their money where there mouth is on a regular basis !

And as they say - no one ever went broke taking profits (while plenty get clobbered just paying reg fees!).

still wondering about 10000 to 1 odds against widgets.biz going for $25k to end user though.

Sounds reasonable enough looking strictly at numbers - ie, out of 100,000,000 registered domain names, are there even 10,000 (that is, 0.01%) that have sold for over $25K?

Yet widgets.biz still works IMO maybe even better than potential competition such as widgets.net, etc. (Sure, no love for .biz in general, but any good reason why widgets.biz couldn't buck that trend?)

Seems to me not such long odds that it could be leveraged to add serious weight (> $25k) to the bottom line of a well-positioned end user looking for easy mind share boost in the next year or 2 or 3 ... (Considering the $$$$$$ regularly spent in TV and print ad campaigns, just $25K for widgets.biz might be cheap.)

And hey - I'll put my money where my mouth is too, if anyone wants to give 10000:1 odds against widgets.biz going for $25K in the next 3 years ... I got $1 DNF right here saying it just might! :-P

Seriously though, thanks for explaining details of your analysis.

Still is over 44,000 searches last month for widgets and 20,000 for widget. In my opinion, if a website is built on this domain you could still capture some of the traffic even with a .biz domain. I value it at low-mid xxxx reseller but more if developed.
