Will AI start favoring domain patterns humans would never choose?

Humans tend to like short, simple, memorable domain names. But AI models don't necessarily think in the same way we do.

Do you think AI might start favoring domain patterns or structures that humans wouldn't normally choose, but still work well for machines?

I think it will be all about the scalability, costs and numbers (over letters) for the LLMs.. especially as we continue moving towards the smart cities and smart devices..

a subdomain is a risky approach = single failure point will be the main domain.

iPV6 addresses could be the answer as well..

will domains be used by machines? :? .. I doubt this, although this would be fantastic news for our industry... domain names are probably more products for people, similar to books, religions and art :)

I think the bigger shift is not even the domain pattern, but how AI decides what to mention at all. From what I’ve seen, some domains just never get surfaced in AI answers, even if they’re strong from an SEO perspective. So it might not be about “better domains”, but about which ones AI can actually interpret clearly.

Curious if others have seen domains getting ignored completely in AI responses?

The reason I have this thought is because of Moltbook, which makes me realize that Is even have their own social media. The development of AI always surprises me.

According to my experience, AI’s focus seems to be more on overall context and trends, rather than isolated keywords or domain names.

In my view, domains that perform well in a human-driven SEO context might still get overlooked by AI simply because they don’t align with the broader topic or conversation the AI is trying to present. For example, AI might prioritize more general terms or domains that fit a wider range of queries, rather than highly specific or niche domains.

.. interesting.. I am here at CloudFest and a topic of AI wiping out the need for domain names is quite hot here.. a number of our industry professionals of 10-20+ year experience are very sceptical about the future of domain names.. hmmm.. I am still very optimistic, though it makes sense listening to others..

Humans need the recall value. Not AI. An IP addresss will suffice :) Our choices might dictate educating AI to think like a human. But, I am positive it won't be influcnced by past sales figures like we do! And, its 26 years since the dotCOM bubble.! We should move on....!

I do agree.. though many argue that the age of search traffic and direct type-in traffic might be over... soon most of the sales will be done directly from LLMs and wechat-like apps

Yeah, I think businesses that thrive will still be the ones creating memorable experiences that align with the needs of their users, and that includes having a well-thought-out domain name.

AI’s involvement may streamline how we manage and assess domains, but for now, human intuition, especially when it comes to branding and market psychology remains crucial.

So, while AI will likely shift domain strategies, I don't think it will replace the need for strategic, human-driven choices 🤔
