For those of you that didn't get the latest email from pool, it's posted below.

What I am interested in, is what do you think of it? My first impression was that it is another blow for the domainer, seeing that you could use all the skill in the world, sorting through lists months in advance to find a sweet name, and then a day or two before it drops, every fool knows about it and will compete against you for it.

Won't this surely make bidding go even higher on some names that might have slipped under the radar?

I can't help but wonder if pool are getting too greedy and they will flood the market, because in effect, they seem to be creating a monster of a model that's making WLS look more appealing...

Your thoughts?

From Pool.com:
We are pleased to introduce Pool.com's latest feature: our HOTLIST. The HOTLIST contains quality domains that are still available to be backordered at POOL.com.

The HOTLIST is available on Pool.com starting at 18:00 GMT (2pm EDT) each day for the following day.

The HOTLIST contains ONLY domains that have NOT been backordered yet with Pool.com. Once a backorder is placed on a domain, it will be immediately removed from the website HOTLIST. In order for a domain to not be included in the email version of our HOTLIST, a backorder should be placed prior to 18:00 GMT (2pm EDT) the day before the domain deletes.

How does the HOTLIST work?

Each day at 18:00 GMT (2pm EDT), we will post the next day's HOTLIST on our website.
Additionally, at 18:00 GMT (2pm EDT), we will email the next day's HOTLIST to those who wish to receive it.
To place a backorder, simply click on a domain in the list.
The domain will automatically be added to your list of backorders, once you have logged into your account.

Given that pool is run by someone previous from snapnames, I'm not surprised at all :D

I believe that pool.com had the other extensions in mind in their drop catching business model. At this point in time, only .COM and .NET will be affected by the WLS. There is still serious money to be made from dropping .ORG, .INFO and .BIZ names. People many not want to pay $10k for a .INFO and .BIZ for most names right now, but $2k caught on a drop auction is nothing.

You just have to place a backorder on the domain atleast 2 days before it drops. Then they won't list it.

Bidding could go a little higher on names that should have "slipped under the radar" but not much. If it hasn't been backordered it's probably not worth much and the bids won't rise.

From Pool.com:

Pool.com seems to be taking the micro$oft approach. Cater the person who does not want to do the work.

Way back when, only geeks knew how to operate computers. micro$oft went after the "mom and pop" population withtheir "windoze" product. The end result? Look at micro$oft today.

It looks like Pool is trying to emulate the same thing. Currently, the people who do their homework backorder names. With the HOTLIST, anybody can backorder that name providing the name has not already been backordered.

At least they are not divulging the entire list in complete form (yet). When they do that, then I will agree that they are being greedy.

One thing i don't like is that they email you the list. I don't want to get emails 150k in size from them everyday.

Yeah I don't really want the list either but don't want to ask them to stop sending it as they will probablynot send me anything at all.

They should have a check box "mail me the list" and only those who check it receive it.

"If you do not wish to receive the HOTLIST email, go to your Preferences tab within your Pool.com account and deactivate your HOTLIST email setting"

Hope this helps.

Hope it works!

That helps a lot!

Now can anyone tell me if you have received your commissions yet?
Also it says we can view our affiliate stats but the only thing I can see is User AccountsSaved Backorders
Successful Backorders (Paid)

I think they could maybe give us a little bit more information.

It seems the Hotlist contains only names that don't yet have backorders, am I right?

I've looked through the lists, and there's nothing there that I would spend $60 on anyway..

Well, the connection and the start of Pool.com right before the launch of WLS does seem too coincidental imho.

At least with Pool, you bid on names after they are already caught.

I don't know about you, but I am really starting to tire of the constant bidding at all these different places for only a slim chance of actually receiving the domain. I don't know how many hours I have wasted bidding back and forth on domain names, being the high bidder at like 4 or 5 different places and still not registering the name.

I would much rather just cut and paste my daily list and go about my business.

Damn right, I have found in the last year of wasting my time with a corrupted drop system that the most productive use of my time is to just contact the registrant for the name you want and give him/her a decent offer, say $1,000. If they accept, its a 100% no time wasted guarantee on a "hope". Much better than trying to grab those stupid names that supposed go for $6k+ to ghost bidders.

Bring on the WLS. At least then, it will instantly prompt me to go straight for the registrant, registrar and in exceptional cases the registry. Time is money. I hate chasing wooly hope.
