It basically happens already. All names won't be auctioned and sold off because a lot of crap drops.

next 2 yrs this percentage will hit 80-90%

but- then what? i mean, will there just be a handful of domainers left who can afford these prices just to get a name? will it get to the point that the "regular domainer" will just drop off because they cant reg anything under 200 bucks?
will all names end up eventually owned by a choice few with deep pockets?

Pretty much IMHO. The biggest risk takers, and those with the deepest pockets. The future is in development. Always has been.

it has already begun.....

allow me to rant for a sec:

"cybersquatting registrars"

they are now making tons of money by instantly parking domains once they expire, tm's and typo's included!

then they sell them off to the highest bidder

then the lawyers and "domain reclaimers" send you C&D letters AFTER you buy the names.

these registrars can set whatever starting price they want for these names, as they already know which one's get traffic.

that's the same as me selling my traffic names to you, but you don't get all frantic and in a frenzy when I run my list....like you do when they run theirs.

I had been catching a lot of [non-premium but still worthwhile] drops by hand, but last week they suddenly dried up overnight. My daily haul went from 5-10 to 0. Don't know the reason ....

its weird- i was talking about this with another domainer, and we thought, what if, in 5 years, registrars are just freely NOT dropping names anymore, but catching everything, and putting it up for auction with high start prices- if NO ONE had the ability to catch any drop-
at that point, they could charge insane prices to reg an unregged name because there were no other choices-
a handful of people (in the big scheme of things) would control a large portion of the webs content -

please do not think this a stupid question- but can the internet just- die? i mean, get to the point where the amount of true user varied content becomes so scarce, its just pointless to go on the web?

one more stupid question- law is iffy on the web i am assuming- can something like this, actually be regulated or stopped? can it ever go back to the way it was, or is that a pipe dream- we are just doomed

This is already happening today. I don't see it becoming any different in the future.

The internet will never become stagnant. Otherwise domains become worthless and no one will want to hold onto them. It would probably cost more to hold these domains than let them drop.

There are already companies holding huge amounts of domains, ex. BuyDomains. There is already registrars holding "Premium domains" and auctioning them to the highest bidder. There is the .TV domains which they are asking for Premium Renewal prices that noone can afford, etc...

yes, i know it is happening now. i know people have a right to try and get drops any way they can (outside of a registrar NOT dropping the name and sending it right to auction- that should just be outright illegal)

say it gets to the point where only 10% of the names actually get to drop- who steps in, if anyone- icann?

And the time is coming when the large domain holders/companies start buying one another out as well. It's the 'free market' at work. With no real oversight it is the natural course of things in today's capitalist world.
