14 ICANN registrars, hailing from The West (and, uh, Ottawa, Rhode Island and Israel) have formed a posse and are ridin' all night to bring American justice to ICANN-town. Yeeeee haaaaaa!
The posse claims that ICANN's WLS decision "will result in hundreds of domain name registrars going out of business." (This would be Very Bad, because there are only about 180 registrars accredited, as far as we know.)

Yes, it's all about $$$. Verisign proposed this system to milk from the domain drop market, and those being affected will of course oppose it.

Perhaps the correct title should be WLS Hypocrites VS anti-WLS Hypocrites

GoDaddy has an open system that is fixed-price. The initial assertion is false.

The registrars are definitely helping out consumers, preserving choice and competition by their actions. Recall that there was a *consensus* against WLS, not only by registrars, but amongst the various constituencies of the Names Council. Only a corrupt ICANN Board ignored that consensus, in violation of their consensus-based procedures.

Don't we all remember a few years ago when Network Solutions had the registrar monopoly? Don't we all remember the associated high prices, terrible service, and poor security?

My, how quickly we forget!

Sure, the free market is a brutal place to compete, but it is certainly better than handing over the keys to the Kingdom to the likes of a John Rockefeller, Bill Gates, or Network Solutions.

Don't we all remember a few years ago when .COM had a human-made-wannabe monopoly? Its been so few years in human history, and people still think .COM is the be all and end all of the Internet. Laggard thinking in this morphing space. History always repeats itself.

The more I read these domain industry boards, the more I come to the conclusion that some of the people who support WLS support it not because they really believe it will help them, consumers, or the industry, but because they want to punish those people more successful than themselves.

Define success? If the definition of success is to successfully grab other people's trash or to try to steal legitimate domains from under the noses of others because of some admin mistake, then you can have all the success you want.

1. WLS will definitely help domain resellers get more sales enquiries

2. WLS will definitely help domain owners realise that their reg fee was not wasted after all and maybe they should do something about it

3. WLS will definitely help all those small players wasting money on countless services and ending up empty handed for it all.

4. WLS will definitely help the buyer/developer make a decison on what to do - contact the registrant or WLS holder - rather than wasting time looking at all other alternatives and end up losing the name.

5. WLS will definitely help improve the image of the industry by making it as clean and transparent as possible. The rampant insider RRP deals and weird shill bids today is making the industry look very shady, imho.
