hello,

I here alot about WLS but do not understand the jargon. I see buydomains is against.

Could some one please explain what it is and what it will do?

And also how will it affect us trying to catch names?

Will it make it eisier? How/why not?
Who does it benifit, why is NSi doing this?

Is it being put in place 4 sure or maybe? thanks.

WLS can't be introduced before July 25, 2003, but it's being appealed within ICANN by Dotster, as it did not meet the "consensus policy" standard before being allowed by the ICANN Board.

I wouldn't bet on it being implemented on July 25th --- lawyers will stop it before then.

I don't think it will be stopped.

Does the WLS proposal allow for unlimited exchanges like Snapnames does?

Thanks, how does WLS affect us (or buydomains/ultsearch) from catching names?

That is the big question that I would like to hear answered!

Thank you actnow, for some support :)

This has been hotly discussed previously. Should come up in a site search.

What it will mean to us is we will now compete for WL Subscriptions in the same way we currently compete for domains. They are proposed to have a one-year renewal period, like domains, so services will appear that grab dropping WLS's, like we currently do for domains.

Are we all seeing the pattern? :D

Instead of grabbing a domain directly, you'll now have to grab an attempt at the ownership of a domain (only if it drops).. So in addition to expiring domain lists, we'll need expiring WLS lists.

Then, when the competition becomes really strong for expiring WLS's, they'll introduce a Wait Listing service for WLS's...

The big players will write scripts to check for available WLS's on near-expiring names. They will continue to have the power, because they can afford to buy hundreds of WLS's (which can be exchanged an unlimited number of times). We'll pick up the odd name here and there, as we currently do. It will remove the "lottery" effect of the current drop system, where even a well-timed hand-registration can beat the big players.

Yes, you can exchange them an unlimited number of times within the one year subscription period.

That's not correct. 5 times is the limit for WLS. See:

Thank god I got into new namespace as a strategic investment call. The old namespace is too messed up. :dead:

Considering the amount of resources both Ultimate Search and Buy Domains hold, I would not be surprised if most of the top domains went to them if WLS would come into effect. The WLS might sound pretty good on the paper that whoever has the slot for a name will get it. But the reality is gonna hurt...

So if someoen hold the WLS credit to a name, they get it? Isn't that sorta like a snap but garenteed? Is this correct?

I want to know this as well.
I have some more Questions:

When is a WLS available for a name?
How would I know when to buy one for a name?
How much would they cost?

Or have I got it all wrong?

Yes. Correct. It will retail around the same price as a Snap, if not less. Competition between registrars may drive it down as low as the low $40s. You'll be able to exchange 5 times, and register a WLS sub with the registrar of your choice. In reality, realize that WLS will in EFFECT be a "parallel registry" that keeps information about the names that have subs for .COM and .NET names. .ORG, .BIZ, and .INFO will not be a part of this 12-month "experiment".

The caveat of course is the much-much-dreaded "If you can GET the sub AT ALL" debate. The going, and well-founded concern is that WLS subs will be the LARGEST LANDRUSH in Internet history for people WLS subbing prime and not-so-prime names by the hundreds of thousands. While people often have SnapBacks on names as far as 6 or more months prior, the guaranteed nature of WLS will entice big spenders to buy WLS subs even YEARS in advance and by the truckloads, negating any and all possibilities for the "small players" to have even a "shot" at any good names if they did not get in early enough.

SnapNames promises to attempt registering WLS subs for all SnapBack's in its system, but it cannot make any promises.

I'd be interested in seeing how these types of "big players" fair. I think it will be enough of a messy business for everyone that new "cracks" will show for opportunity in the "new game".

Can you imagine monitoring the statistical changes in thousands of names, deciding which WLS subs to exchange, how many exchanges remain on each, and what names have been renewed just before drop time (so as not to waste any time on a sub)? Oy. I'd add though, that this will only be an issue as the years begin to march forward. The initial "gambit" will be probably be a lump-sum "let it ride" for most investors/gamblers (especially for all the thousands of prime names still "gummed up" in the pipes).

WLS subs WILL NOT be able to be switched between registrars. I suspect they will be able to be *cancelled* however. I don't think they'll be able to be "transferred" like domains. I'm not sure how fluidly they'll handle "ownership". Hopefully, with the exception of NOT being able to transfer between registrars, people will be able to change ownership easily (for what that will be worth). Big danger of a growing market for "coalescing vapor" sales.
