Internet growth continued on a steady pace during the first three months of 2008, according to a domain-name report by VeriSign Inc.

VeriSign (NASDAQ:VRSN), an Internet infrastructure service based in Mountain View, said 14 million new domain names were added in the first quarter of the year. The number of top-level domain names reached 162 million, a 26 percent increase from the same quarter a year ago and a 6 percent increase from fourth quarter 2007, the report said.

The report also highlights the importance of India. With more than 41 million Internet users, India ranks as the eighth-largest Internet population in the world. Yet that number represents only about 4 percent of the country's population, according to the latest figures from eMarketer.

"Rapidly emerging regions like India underscore the importance of ensuring that the Internet infrastructure is able to serve every corner of the world," said Raynor Dahlquist, senior vice president of Naming Services at VeriSign, which will open a new regional site in India.

Copies of the 2008 first quarter Domain Name Industry Brief, as well as previous reports, can be obtained at www.verisign.com/domainbrief.
