Slightly odd question.

Would you wait 20 seconds for your whois results?

So I have created a whois lookup service which gets whois data from two sources: the simple whois, and then the full whois record.

It then cleans the output, and highlights the useful components: creation, expiry, emails etc

I have just spent 2-3 hours optimizing/improving it, but based on what it does, it takes the best part of 20 seconds to return a result.

Would you be prepared to wait?
Would you like something to pass the time whilst the data is collected: interesting domaining quotes, news, a game ...!

Let me know.

Cheers
Tom

As long as it doesn't completely lock up my browser (including all tabs) I can just go to another tab and wait.

But - most Whois give you the full information in a few seconds so it would be a hard sell unless something more was offered - other than highlighted information.

I hope you have a dedicated server...

If you did create this then I would have it executed server side and have the client automatically refresh the page in 20 seconds and if it's still not complete then return another refresh in 20 seconds (kinda like the Paypal login).

To answer your question, yes, I would wait. Instead of highlighting the creation date though-- I would make the script do the math for me how old it is. I hate using my fingers...

I personally would not wait. Especially with the new domaintools.com feature which allows you to have a default My Whois section were you're able to place the information that you need or look at the most in one page. So if all I needed was expiring date and nameserver I can have that show up by default all the time.

Tom, which part of it is taking the time? Grabbing the info or parsing and then displaying it? Are you using PHP on a Unix-type platform? If so, you might want to consider doing the grunt work using the shell; 'awk' and 'grep' are your friends with this type of thing. PM me if you want.

Thanks for the posts/opinions.

I looked into this further, and spent a few hours playing to see what was causing the lag.

It was in fact a mysql connection problem. I had inadvertently put numerous sql queries within a loop. Thus hundreds too many queries were being executed. Since removing those lines the time has diminished to 3 seconds (max), which I feel is perfectly acceptable.

I note all the points made.

Draggar, it did not lock the browser, it simply took a long time to load :)

Amplify, I was thinking of having an ajax based system such that content is loaded once ready.

Foxo, thanks for the information I intend to build up such that my services will be better than those offered by domain tools. Plus everything will be totally free :)

Dale, I will drop you a PM when I get a chance. Although this problem ahs fixed itself, you are clearly very knowledgable, and if it is OK I would love to discuss 'stuff' with you in general..

Sorry but I'm a "i want it now" kind of guy, 20 seconds just brings back horrible memories of when i used to use a dial up Internet service provider.

I guess you could always disguise it by using one of those number/word thingos that prevents bots from apparently doing multiple searches..........but i hate them too!
