closed www names

Hi i have been looking into the old www****** internet names recently and have found that there are quite alot of big companies who own these names. Are these a wise investment, is it because its a common mistake missing out the dot, or is it just cleaning up the stray traffic?

It just seems funny how most of the UK's big business's all own these, and out of the ones i've tried so far (about 300) most are taken already.

all www..... and ......com/net/org/etc for generic and already developed large web sites are pretty much all taken, same for typo's.... people figured this one out along time ago!
