Well, there are issues about which language we talking about here at it clearly is used in Japanese, but it would appear that it is most significance in Simplified Chinese. My favourite Chinese dictionary gives:
universal / general / widespread / commonplace
There are no Traditional Variants which means that if it has relevance in Taiwan then the same characters would be used.
I think it is a good generic term, but at the moment such generic potential brandable seem to be little exploited by the advertising industries in the Far East. It may take time for this to fullfil its potential.
