Is it just me or is the ICANN plan to corral online porn going terribly wrong? We already have reports that universities are snapping up XXX domains in an effort to get ahead of porn pranksters who want to besmirch a few good online names with smut.

.XXX is not supported by the vast majority of the adult industry it claims to represent.

I am sure ICM Registry will do fine for one major reason -

Their bread and butter will just be defensive regs.
People who’s only interest in .XXX is stopping potential abuse of their brand/TM.

In fact much of their marketing has been around "protecting your brand".

Many people consider this type of behavior legal extortion, and it sets a bad precedent for future extensions.
There is a reason the majority of major companies are against the new gTLD program.

Yes, and this is sooo true of each and every (non-restricted) extension.

There are enough possible names in com/net/org/gov/mil, that the market doesnt need the other 275 flavors.
(and now with unlimited extensions coming, every company or trademark will have to hedge their bets in a forever trail of registrations unneeded.)
