Hi,

Is .xxx having serious trouble with renewals. I think yes.

I have done a poll of the thirty or so domainers I know that have registered non TM, non defensive registrations.

They have only renewed about 20% of their registrations. These people are experienced, they did not register reallyhot.xxx, only keywords.xxx. Yet still they are dropping 80%

If this sampling holds true for all others, it would mean a overall 80% drop in registrations.

That would be significant. We will soon know in another 60 days.

They should have lowered the renewal cost to $25,00 retail. They admitted they priced the cost with management of 125,000 registrations.

They more than doubled that amount, so it is hard to justify the price structure now.

How many here renewed their .xxx

Just as I predicted in another thread :)

The renewal rate is always very telling with respect to the demise or success of any TLD.

And I think renewal and registration rates will drop to somewhere in the $19- $29 range as you say.

Actually, reallyhot.xxx is better than random keyword.xxx

If you expected to flip "any keyword" .xxx, you lost the game from square #1.

.XXX is for developers, albeit, of the adult kind.

Go to Search.xxx and knock yourself out.

All the extensions that are unfit for pure play domaining are by definition developer TLDs.

But the vast majority of .xxx registrations are idle/inactive. It's more a defensive than speculative TLD, so the high registration fee is not an incentive to develop.
The .mobi registry also had a showcase site but now it seems that nearly all the domains featured have gone away.

.XXX is a special TLD and many domainers don't understand that. It doesn't need 1 million registrations to be successful. It's a monopoly in the adult namespace, and that alone is a significant achievement. Domainers that registered keywords with the intent to resell, lost money because that's not how this baby functions.

how much is the average .xxx renewal then? $85? sort of range?

also I heard the 'top' keyword ones that sold high have even higher rates for renewal
is that true?

well, that is the cause of huge drops and will continue to decline as most of the domains were reg'd by domainers.

"It's a monopoly in the adult namespace, and that alone is a significant achievement."

It will probably no longer be a monopoly when the .sex goes live next year.

I doubt that ICANN will give all three new extensions .sex, .adult and .porn to ICM Registry. The .sex has two competing bids to run the registry.

Unless, of course if ICM buys out the other bid.
