I've seen two services so far offering this.

One charges $17.95 per pre-registration, no registration fee upfront.

The other charges $5 pre-registration, and $80 registration fee upfront ($85).

The first says the $17.95 is non-refundable but you will only be charged a registration fee in the event of a successful registration.
The second says it will refund the money ($80?) if it's not successful.

Do you think these are a good "lotto" type of investment?

If I told you what I really think of these new extensions ie .pro, .xxx you'd probably tell me to wash my mouth out with soap and water. How about a new extension, dot crap?

All my sites would use a subdomain, XX.is.crap hehe, imagine it.

Would you really trust a hosting company, hosting.crap or icann.crap haha

My point is that all these new extensions are simply put in place to line the pockets of interested parties ie ICANN. They should be concentrating on getting the system and extensions that we have now right instead of trying to undermine established businesses and diluting the system with rubbish, money grabbing initiatives.

I don't trust pre-registrations but the .xxx domain will take off.

Free Preregs are OK. As soon a Registrar is accredited he can take also money for preregs, but before hmmmm, I don´t know. you never know what happens, does the company will die?
What happens with your money? What will be the price for a domain?
We made .eu preregs for about 2 years for free.

Asking money is for sure better for the cashflow. But you don´t know the price, you can´t ask money only for a database entry. Hey if this is the business, I will ask tomorrow money for the ".x" it is much shorter as tripple X! I will write a request to ICANN. The .x will be the placeholder for everything. I want only the money from the preregs.

FYI - From what I hear:

#1 - there is no authorized .XXX pre reg service.

#2 - The .XXX owners will be keeping many of the best domains for themselves.

#3 - It's not an open registration. You must be approved by the .XXX owners before you get a domain...you can't just reg one...even if it's available.

Exclusive ext's never get off the ground, cause it can never can gain enough popularity. Also if priced too high the same thing can happen.

This thread is not about the .xxx extension being "good" or "bad", rather, the value of the current two pre-registration services.

Somatic- No, new.net will very likely NOT be grandfathered into the .XXX registry.

All new.net .xxx domains will stop working once the DNS for the real .xxx starts.

I would hope so (for the sake of the "infected" new.net computers).

Do you have anymore info on item #3? I'm wondering how they will approve or decline a registration.

c'mon now. .xxx isnt all that bad. i bet that this is the one star out of the whole bunch of new tlds. .travel could actually do good if it werent restricted the way it is. .jobs too, if you could actually own sandiego.jobs that would be f-g great. maybe a few years down the line they'll open it up in order to save it.
